Can I help to prevent heat wave deaths? Recently, we (Nelen & Schuurmans) built a high resolution map with the new heat stress standard developed by the Meteorology and Air Quality Section of Wageningen University. We implemented this in close collaboration with the authors of the standard, while this was being finalized. The result was broadcasted on national television (NOS Journaal). I would like to evaluate an implementation of this Dutch methodology (physiological equivalent temperature – PET) and technique (Geoblocks) in countries with severe heat stress problems, such as India. Together with the developers of the PET mapping algorithm, and several (Indian) experts, we explore opportunities to export this method to developing countries. Today, Gert-Jan Steeneveld and Wietze Suijker would like to present the PET standard recipe and explain how we can map heat wave hotspots in India.
